Melaleuca, Inc. February 1992 -- July 1995
Exclusively responsible for day-to-day legal support of all departments.
- Review, manage, and advise senior management on sales/marketing issues, regulatory matters, worker's compensation, human resources, and international law.
- Review, negotiate, and draft complex contracts for commercial transactions.
- Organized, staffed, and managed six person legal department where none previously existed which:
- Reduced outside legal costs by $500,000 (60%) in one year; and
- Dramatically decreased turn-around time for legal support to all departments.
- Drafted and negotiated contracts involving multi-million dollar commercial facilities, equipment, raw materials, computer hardware/software, banking agreements, and service contracts.
Negotiated multi-million dollar telecommunication affinity contract.
Advised management regarding all aspects of regulatory compliance and defended company from all regulatory actions, including OSHA, FDA, Federal Trade Commission, and Attorney General investigations, inspections, assurances of voluntary compliance, and adverse actions.
Collaboratively took Melaleuca into Canada, its first international market; handled all related legal issues. Obtained approval for drugs and registered cosmetic products:
- Licensed company to do business in nine provinces;
- Advised on U.S./Canadian taxes, customs, and business structure;
- Leased Canadian distribution facility; and
- Saved company over $250,000 in Canadian outside legal expenses.
- One of only two Americans listed on Health Canada's Official List of Consultants to the Pharmaceutical/Cosmetic Industries.
Evans, Keane, Koontz & Gibler October 1989 -- February 1992

General corporate representation of growth oriented companies.
Prosecuted and defended complex commercial litigation, including products liability, labor law, construction, and professional malpractice.
Defended numerous employers against worker's compensation claims.
Researched and drafted pleadings, discovery, motions, and briefs.
U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps January 1986 -- October 1989
Successfully managed and defended a claims portfolio exceeding $50 million, resulting in the payment of no settlements or judgments.
Provided expansive legal services to over 1,800 clients in all areas of civil law ranging from contracts, real estate, domestic relations, wills and estates, and consumer protection.
Eliminated an 18 month backlog of claims cases in 6 months.
Reorganized and redirected a problem-ridden division to reduce error rate to zero and increase recoveries by 89%.
Authored 85-page book on dozens of aspects of civil law
